Would you ever start off on a road trip without knowing where you are going? Without deciding what route you will take to get there? If you wanted to build a house, would you just buy some wood and bricks and start nailing things together? No, you’d have a plan to show you what the finished product will look like and what tools, materials and techniques you will need to make that happen.

How can you make social media marketing work for your business if you don’t have a plan?

A digital marketing strategy is an essential tool for your business. Sure, you could just start posting some stuff on Facebook or Twitter and see what happens, but how do you even KNOW what happens if you don’t have a strategy.

A good strategy will start by auditing what you currently have in your arsenal — your current branding, your current marketing efforts, your social media accounts, your website, how you show up in search engines — and take a snapshot of where you are today.

Next, you’ll need to think about what your goals are. Of course, you want to make more money…don’t we all, but (let me tell you a secret) your social media can’t make money for you. Your product is what makes money for you. Your social media can attract people to your product, send them to your website to learn more or to buy, but simply being on social media doesn’t make the dough start rolling in. You need to have something that people want to buy and you have to present it in a way that makes them want to buy it. Here’s where your goals come into play.

Think about it for a moment. Do you want…

  • more followers on your accounts?
  • more people talking about your product?
  • prospective customers to join your email list?
  • to send prospective customers to your website to look at your offerings and (hopefully) make a purchase?
  • to show a former customer an upgrade or an item that will complement a previous purchase?
  • to lure back a prospective customer who never completed their purchase?

You can want all of these things and more, but the methods you will take will vary depending on the goal.

Your digital marketing strategy will help you see where you are and where you want to be and show you a way to get there.
